These buildings were once a great example of a classical single-story downtown storefront, with high brick parapet walls and good store frontage. The storefronts offered goods and services with the flair of a downtown shopping center. They have since been trashed with some Owner’s / builder’s idea of a sloping roof, to keep water out. True, it gets the job done, but at the cost of aesthetical appearance.
I’ve calculated the cost of the framing, metal roofing and metal frontage along both buildings, its staggering versus the “flat” roof they could have replaced both roofs with, and the design would have been in keeping with the original downtown designs. So, instead of just blogging, I’ve spoken with members of the Downtown Revitalization Comity, as well as the Local Chamber, both feel we missed an opportunity to define our Downtown Business District with stricter design codes, and now we have this junk to offer the world.
Of course the blame really shifts to the Owner / Contractor and City entities where had design principles been in place to keep junk out of our downtown, the Owner would have saved money, the builder would look like they knew what they were doing classically, and the City would have appeared more in tune with.Don’t get me wrong, the Contractor did a fine job in keeping water out, this is the purpose of Architecture. The Owner recognizes they need to provide a water-proof building to their tenants, so this isn’t a smear on any one, its simply a missed opportunity pointed out.
